Abstract: The article examines an episode from the academic biography of Ieremia Isayevich Ioffe (1888–1947), a prominent Russian art historian and art theorist, and one of the immediate forerunners of Russian culturology. The author focuses on I.I. Ioffe’s service at the Institute for the Comparative History of the Literature and Languages of the West and East / the State Institute for the Discursive Culture in 1927–1933. This research institute was one of the most important centers of humanitarian science in Leningrad and brought together scholars with various methodological backgrounds and views who worked on common research topics. In 1927, the institute began to actively undergo the process of Sovietization, which raised the issue of strengthening its staff with Marxist cadres. In this context, I.I. Ioffe became a first-class research fellow at the institute, which was probably due to the invitation of his teacher and patron V.A. Desnitsky to a leadership position there. The author of the article, relying on materials from the Central State Archive of Literature and Art of St. Petersburg (TsGALI SPb), the Central State Archive of St. Petersburg (TsGA SPb), the St. Petersburg branch of the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences and some other archives, reconstructs the activities of I.I. Ioffe at this institute.
