Bagdasaryan, N. (2025) The Development of Russian Cultural Studies in the 1980s-2000s: Hopes, Illusions, and Reality

Abstract: Modern Russian cultural studies, emerging in the post-Soviet space of Russia, has gone through several stages in its institutional development. The first stage (the second half of the 1980s-1991) was the period of the formation of the new discipline. The establishment of a department at Bauman Moscow State Technical University in 1987 was accompanied by calls for humanitarianism and the general cultural development of students at technical universities. This movement was supported by the country's universities, but unclear content, a vague and varied curriculum, and unprofessional teaching staff persisted. The second period, which had been developing since the early 1990s, emerged in educational practice by the middle of the decade. The process of defining the goals and objectives of teaching cultural studies, conceptual models, and subject boundaries was underway, with the discipline's content being refocused on future professional activities. The culmination of this period was a textbook on cultural studies for technical universities, published in 1999. In the 2000s, the discipline was taught at all universities across the country, personnel training was underway, Dissertation Councils were established, scientific papers were defended, congresses were held, specialized journals were founded, and cultural studies communities were formed. Currently, the status of cultural studies in engineering universities is once again becoming uncertain due to the latest transformation of the social sciences and humanities. The experience of developing a cultural studies course for engineers, the depth of research methodology and practice in solving problems arising in sociotechnical systems, the necessity and urgency of the problem of sociocultural assessment of technology, the consequences of engineering activities, and issues of responsibility – all make the field of cultural studies of engineering relevant.

Key words: cultural studies, Bauman Moscow State Technical University, morphology and phenomenology of culture, cultural studies textbook for technical universities, subject field of cultural studies, stages of cultural studies in Russia, cultural studies of technology, P.K. Engelmeyer.
