Creating Emotional Spaces: the Atmospheric Approach in Italian Aesthetics (2024) Duty to Nature and the Digital Culture of PresentismAbstract: This study is devoted to the so-called atmospheric turn that has become a common place for various scientific fields such as aesthetics, cultural studies, philosophy of art and architecture. The relevance of the topic corresponds to the actualization of the study of everyday life and the expansion of the disciplinary fields of aesthetics. Moreover, the discussion of the concept of atmosphere is accompanied by a dynamic growth of scientific publications on the topic as well as the organization of conferences on atmospheric aesthetics.
The author's research interest is focused on the specifics of the development of atmospheric studies in Italy. The works of Tonino Griffero, one of the most famous theorists of atmospheres, are already known to Russian-speaking readers. The novelty of this article lies in bringing into scholarly circulation the works of other representatives of the Italian academy, e.g. Elena Mancioppi, Nicola Perullo and Elisabetta Di Stefano. The author puts particular emphasis on the problem of creating atmospheres, one of the most discussed topics among Italian scholars on atmospheric studies, and on the controversial issue of possible implications of this process.
The article examines the key terms of Tonino Griffero's approach related to design of emotional spaces: the concepts of affordance and ecstasy of materials. It identifies the leading directions of the research in this area presented in the works of Italian aestheticians, that is, the ways that marketers, advertising specialists, designers and make-up artists create emotional spaces. The author examines the problem of interrelation between the process of creating atmospheric spaces and ideological discourse.
As a result, it was established that in Italian studies the atmospheric approach is closely intertwined with the academic interest in the senses of touch, smell and taste viewed as secondary within the Western European culture, as well as the development of the somaesthetics project proposed by Richard Shusterman. The author considers the approach of Italian philosophers to be very productive for stimulating projects in line with the practical aesthetics and critical reflection on the mechanisms of creating atmospheres, on their impact on humans and the environment.
Key words: atmosphere, atmospherology, aesthetics of atmospheres, Italian aesthetics, olfactory aesthetics, aesthetics of smell, politics of atmospheres, emotional space, olfactory marketing, Tonino Griffero, Nicola Perullo, Elena Mancioppi, Elisabetta Di Stefano.
