Folk Music Culture in the Scientific Heritage of Tatyana Sergeevna Bershadskaya The Phenomenon of Religious Identity of the Kalmyk Ethnosis

Abstract: The scientific contribution of Professor, Doctor of Art History, Professor of the Department of Music Theory of the St. Petersburg Rimsky-Korsakov State Conservatory Tatyana Sergeevna Bershadskaya (1921–2021) to musicology is undeniable, but its comprehensive assessment has not yet been fully implemented. One of the topics worthy of attention is related to the scientist's interest in folk musical culture (and not only Russian). In this sense, T. S. Bershadskaya is a continuer of the tradition adopted from her immediate teachers, primarily from Kh. S. Kushnarev. Folk music is both a historically early layer of musical culture, allowing us to observe the development and formation of modal thinking, forms of polyphony, and part of the world musical heritage, on the basis of which professional musical art developed over time. Within the framework of this article, some biographical lines are outlined, indicating that folk music was in the field of attention of T. S. Bershadskaya throughout her life: this was the case during the preparation of her candidate dissertation “The Main Compositional Patterns of Polyphony of Russian Folk (Peasant) Songs”, and during her work as a member of the Musical Folklore Section of the Leningrad Department of the Union of Composers, and in the process of her teaching activities — the implementation of scientific supervision of diploma theses and dissertation research. The material for the article was published works, interviews and archival documents stored in the Archive of the St. Petersburg Conservatory and the Central State Archive of Literature and Art of St. Petersburg.
