The Imagination of the Erupted Media: The Becoming of the Materiality of the ImageAbstract: The article proposes to consider the transformation of media culture through attractive figures of popular culture, whose appearance on the screen captures the imagination and changes the imaginary of media culture. The purpose of the article is to consider the cinematic figure of the clown, whose popularity has gone beyond genre cinema and has found wide distribution in modern culture, from the standpoint of media archeology as a research method presented in the works of Siegfried Zielinski. The archaeology of media can be represented, on the one hand, as a purely practical positivist activity for the search and reconstruction of technical devices – "media", on the other hand, as a sublime analysis of the logic and sensuality of culture through the prism of these devices. Both of these views represent the essential binocular optics of media archaeology. A media-archaeological analysis of the figure of the evil clown, embodied in a number of popular films, makes it possible to identify problematic points of cultural development of the sensuality of the new media era, where the imagination is most influenced by new technologies for mediating memory, communication and artistic creation.
The research is aimed at finding a theoretical framework that would allow describing and analyzing the phenomena of imagination in their materiality. Imagination and the imaginary balance on cultural boundaries, seeping between the physical and the technological, which necessarily requires a rethink of materiality itself and the agency.
Key words: imagination, imaginary, erupted media, evil clown, comic, memory, materiality, communication, media culture, media archeology.
