With the Idea of Music – Through Centuries and CountriesAbstract: The review examines the textbook of the Soviet and Russian philosopher, aesthetician, cultural critic, art historian, professor Vyacheslav P. Shestakov “The history of musical aesthetics from Antiquity to the present day”, published in the St. Petersburg publishing house “Compozitor” in 2022. This book is the first and the only one on the history of musical aesthetics written in Russia and covering the maximum volume of the material under study, including researches on the thought of music in our country. The writing is an expanded and revised version of the monograph “From ethos to affect. The history of musical aesthetics from antiquity to the XVIIIth century” (Moscow, publishing house “Muzyka”, 1975); it is also successively connected with the anthology series “Monuments of Musical and Aesthetic Thought”, published by the publishing house “Muzyka” from 1960 to 1981. The seven parts of the book, devoted respectively to Antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the XVIIth century, the Enlightenment, the XIXth and XXth centuries, consistently characterize the views on music of representatives of various professions, including non-musicians: philosophers, theologians, politicians. The author offers his own system of periodization of the musical aesthetics history, based on the social history and the specifics of musical styles, highlighting epochs and periods both more and less favorable for the development of musical art. The fate of the so-called mimesis theory, the practice-oriented approach to music, its historical understanding, which declare themselves in different epochs and periods, is traced.
In the new chapters of the book, characterizing the XIXth and XXth centuries, representatives of German classical aesthetics I. Kant, G.W.F. Hegel, A. Schopenhauer, F. Nietzsche, who included music in the field of ontology and epistemology, are considered. These are also scientists of the last century, including those who lived and worked in the USA (Ed. Lippmann, S. Langer), who reflected the politicization of art, representing various philosophical trends (symbolism, hermeneutics). The informative book of Vyacheslav Shestakov reflects many writings of the largest Soviet and Russian musicologists and scientists of other specialties who wrote about music.
