Adventurer, Punch or Commander from God? Image of Nestor Makhno in Post-soviet Documentary Films

Abstract: The famous national hero of the Civil war Nestor Makhno is one of the key figures in Russian history of the early twentieth century. His image and fate have repeatedly become the subject of study by historians, inspired filmmakers to various film adaptations, in which he acted as one of the main characters. This article continues the study of the screen image of N. I. Makhno, this time in the post-soviet period in documentary films. Quite a lot of such films have been released over the past decades. A significant part of them are created according to a single stereotype and repeat the same myths that are ingrained in society. The goal was often not so much to reach the truth, to discover the secrets of the past, as to create a well-defined public opinion in modern society through electronic manipulation (mass media). At the same time, you can also find quite balanced reasoning, competent presentation of fragile historical material, attempts to logically explain the complex relationships between people and peoples in those early years. This article is about these works and the situation in our cinema in relation to such a complex topic.
