Architectural Restoration in Italy: Ethical and Eistemological ApproachesAbstract: Architecture as we know is one of the products or creations of the human epoch (Anthropocene), as well as one of the prerequisites for it. The goal of keeping certain objects up to date is one of the ethical tasks of architecture. We live in an era when the obsolescence of buildings is accelerating more and more, in parallel with the accumulation of the volume of objects that cannot be destroyed. Restoration theory has the ability not only to overcome the destruction of the human environment, but also, much less often, to invent new ways of coexistence, more sustainable ways of life and a more aesthetic living experience.
The history of Italian architectural restoration after World War II largely determines global trends in this type of activity. The article proposes to consider the foundations of the theory of architectural restoration in Italy in order to identify ethical and epistemological approaches and prospects for their application in a renewed anthropocene environment. Along with the standard theory of architectural restoration (epistemology and theory of the use of techniques and materials), special attention is paid to local (urban, regional) ethical criteria for choosing approaches to decision-making about the restoration method and questions about the difficulty in complying with standards, depending on many factors, the understanding of which is in the field of cultural sciences.
The article also addresses the problem of the origins of the concept of the "art of building" as a sacred and mythopoeic creation, which is quite compatible with the actual theoretical significance of approaches to the preservation and actualization of classical and more modern heritage.
