Repressions and Human Losses in terms of the Period of the Civil War in Russia Reflected in American Newsreel ‘Allied Expeditionary Forces in Siberia, 1918–1919’

Abstract: In 2014 the US National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) provided free access to the American newsreel «Allied Expeditionary Forces in Siberia, 1918 – 1919». The material is a silent black-and-white newsreel, lasting almost two and a half hours. Its uniqueness is explained by the fact that among the famous films of American and British invaders, it is the only historical source reflecting the kinematics of the Civil War period in eastern Russia. In addition to access to the newsreel itself, the US National Archives and Records Administration provided the opportunity to view test descriptions of film plots of the corresponding lists of motion pictures that make up the film. Due to this fact, the attribution of newsreel footage became possible for the authors. The article examines such inevitable phenomena of the Civil War as human losses and repressions, visualized by the specified video material.
